Summer Practice in Torrey
August 7 – 13, 2023
Torrey, Utah

This week of retreat is an exploration of community and interpersonal practice with Diane Musho Hamilton Roshi.  The daily schedule includes zazen and other elements of sesshin, such as dokusan and work practice, and will feature an extended period of practice in skills of emotional maturity, including working with the spectrum of emotion and learning to transmute emotion. There will be outings to Capitol Reef National Park and other locations for practice in nature.

Developing Emotional Maturity is the gateway to the heart. To become a whole-hearted human being, someone who is able to include the pain and difficulty of our lives, we must develop the emotional line. We call this kind of development emotional maturity or emotional literacy. This will help you to cultivate a willingness to feel, to become awake to your emotional states, and at the same time, develop a complete willingness to let feeling subside or go without holding on when it no longer serves.

Everyone can learn how to work with powerful feelings and emotional states. When we do, they enrich our lives and our relationships.

Over the course of 7 days, we will:

  • Go beyond the tendency to suppress or deny feelings
  • Identify the wisdom in any emotion
  • Become comfortable entering challenging emotional terrain
  • Develop emotional fluency with six primary emotions: Fear, Anger, Grief, Confusion, Longing, Jealousy
  • Use the 5-step practice for metabolizing an emotion
  • Unpack complex emotions and work with contradictory feelings
  • Increase your emotional range of motion.
  • Overcome the tendency to cling to emotional experiences
  • Develop the courage to communicate feelings in beneficial ways.
