35 Classes in 2024

Segment 1: January 16 – March 19, 2024 (10 classes)
We will begin with David Hinton’s China Root: Taoism, Ch’an, and Original Zen.  This book explores Hinton’s thesis that Ch’an’s roots are set not only in Indian Buddhism but are deeply fed by native Chinese Taoist philosophy and insight into the nature of reality and our experience.  It is provocative but also illuminating.

Segment 2: April 9 – May 28, 2024 (7 classes)
We next will read Cultivating the Empty Field: The Silent Illumination of Zen Master Hongzhi. Hongzhi was a 12th-century Chinese monk who had a large role in reviving the Caodong (Japanese Soto) lineage.  Taigen Daniel Leighton’s excellent introductory essay puts Hongzhi in a historical and spiritual perspective.  He points out that Dogen’s teaching of shikantaza derives in large part from Hongzhi’s approach to silent illumination. The practice instructions in this book strongly relate to the Taoist roots Hinton discusses. They are lovely to read.

Segment 3: June 18 – July 30, 2024 (7 classes)
Our third book is Janet Jiryu Abels’ Making Zen Your Own: Giving Life to Twelve Key Golden Age Ancestors.  It is a deceptively simple book of well-told stories about twelve Chinese ancestors. She brings them alive and shows that the challenges we face in our practice lives are not different from those that confronted practitioners a thousand years ago.

Segment 4: September 17 – November 26, 2024 (11 classes)
Finally, the last book is Frances Dojun Cook’s How to Raise an Ox. A Dogen scholar and student of Maezumi Roshi’s, Cook presents his translations of key fascicles from Dogen’s Shobogenzo.  Most importantly, the book includes his excellent essays explaining Dogen’s teachings. These essays are helpful in understanding Dogen and bringing Zen into our lives. Musho Roshi and I often refer to these essays to discuss the fundamentals of Zen practice.
