This course explores the intersection of personal and social awakening.
Drawing from Buddhist values of liberation, wholeness, and equanimity, which dovetail with American social values of liberty, unity, and equality, participants will discover how inner and outer enlightenment reinforce one another.
The goal is to cultivate a wakeful, engaged citizenry—self-responsible yet compassionate, autonomous yet connected, grounded in inner peace and acting for a just society.
The day begins with meditation to inspire you to be involved in the political process with Zen insight. Topics we will engage include:
- Values Exploration: Exploring Sameness
Liberation/Liberty
Equanimity/Equality
Compassion/Pursuit of Happiness
Interdependence – E Pluribus Unum
Universal Compassion – “All men are created equal”
Sangha (Community) – “We the People”
- Challenges of Conversation: Working with Difference
Impacts of difference on the nervous system
Self-regulation
Expanding to multiple perspectives
Curiosity – a less fixed view
Acknowledgement of sameness
Community across differences
Skills for conversations
